LinkedIn Isn’t the Problem. Your SSI Just Called You Out

June 02, 20257 min read

LinkedIn's Social Selling Index (SSI)

If you’re posting, commenting, and still hearing crickets - it’s not the algorithm’s fault. Your SSI is simply reflecting what’s not landing. Let’s tweak that mirror.

Let’s be honest. LinkedIn can feel like a confusing mix of self-promotion and digital networking. You post, comment, and engage, but does it even make a difference?

That’s where the Social Selling Index (SSI) comes in. Your SSI score is a number between 0 and 100. It’s LinkedIn’s way of evaluating how well you’re using the platform to build your personal brand, make meaningful connections, and drive business results.

The Four Factors Behind SSI

LinkedIn calculates your SSI based on four main areas:

  • Building your professional brand

  • Finding the right people

  • Engaging with insights

  • Nurturing relationships

Each of these is scored out of 25. And together, they add up to a total score out of 100 that reflects your presence, credibility, and activity on LinkedIn.

But here’s what makes it matter: high SSI scores reflect the kinds of activity that build visibility, trust, and yes, more leads.

What a Low vs. High SSI Score Looks Like

If your SSI score is on the low end, you might be putting in effort with little reward. Here's what that might look like:

  • Your profile lacks clarity and personality

  • You’re posting, but not engaging in conversation

  • You’re not making a memorable impact

On the flip side, a high SSI score reflects a more effective presence:

  • You’re being discovered for the right reasons

  • You’re forming valuable business relationships

  • Your engagement is meaningful, not just surface-level

You Don’t Need to Be a Content Machine to Win on LinkedIn

You don’t need to become a full-time content creator or go viral to increase your SSI. Here’s what we walk clients through without fluff or burnout.

Make Your Profile Work Like a Sales Page

This isn’t about stuffing it with buzzwords. It’s about making your profile sound like a real human with real value.

  • Write a headline that clearly says what you do

  • Use a banner image with a touch of personality

  • Make your "About" section sound like you, not like a job description

  • Invite profile visitors to take the next step, whether it’s booking a call or browsing your work

Connect With the Right People Genuinely

Quick story: One of my clients reached out after connecting with someone they originally saw as just a peer in the industry. They ended up on a podcast episode together. That episode alone led to three new clients. All because they made a genuine connection and followed through. That’s what happens when networking actually feels like connecting.

Not everyone you meet is a prospective client. And that’s a good thing.

You’re looking for three types of people:

  • Connectors: the kind of people who love to refer and connect others

  • Collaborators: peers who work with similar audiences in complementary ways

  • Clients: folks who could benefit from your service now or sometime down the road

Start by:

  • Using smart filters to find aligned individuals

  • Sending connection requests with a personal touch

  • Starting conversations that actually go somewhere

Share Content That Helps, Not Bores

I saw a fantastic post the other day that really stuck with me. Someone shared that they had recently fired the company managing their LinkedIn profile. They felt misaligned, like the company’s goals were all about impressions and reach, while they just wanted to sound like themselves.

He wasn’t chasing influencer status. He wanted to make genuine connections and have a presence that reflected who he really is. His post was honest, even a little raw, and it got me thinking: he's definitely not alone. I’ve had clients express the same thing.  They don’t want to “perform” on LinkedIn. They want to show up as themselves, and make their presence count.

And let’s be real, most of us use some form of AI support now. But AI posts alone don’t cut it. You, me, all of us... we have to inject our own perspective, stories, and personality into what we share. That’s the difference between content you scroll right by and a post that makes you stop and engage.

It could be something as simple as a client win that made you proud. A shift in your thinking. Or even a post like this, sparked by someone else’s vulnerable moment.

Your audience doesn’t want perfection. They want perspective.

Some of the best-performing posts aren’t polished, they’re personal. Think:

  • Stories about what’s working (or not)

  • Lessons from recent client wins or failures

  • Thoughts on industry changes with your unique angle

You can even re-share content, but add your own context. That’s where the value lies.

Actually Talk to People

It’s not just about the algorithm, it’s about the people.

Really, the good stuff on LinkedIn happens in DMs and comments. That’s where relationships begin, ideas spark, and business unfolds.

Engage like you mean it. Not because of some magic algorithm boost, but because real connection is what drives real opportunity.

What Is a Good SSI Score?

Most active LinkedIn users score between 30 and 50. We aim for 70+ for our clients. This is a level that often puts them ahead of the pack in their industry.

This shift matters because when you consistently show up with value, LinkedIn takes notice. The algorithm favors real engagement..  That means more eyes on your profile, more reach on your posts, and more opportunities to connect.

How to Check Your Social Selling Index

Ready to find out where you stand?

From there, it’s just a matter of bringing in more of YOU!

Your SSI Score Is Trust in Numbers

One of the things I do that really helps me stay consistent is blocking off 15 minutes every Monday just to respond to comments and messages on LinkedIn. It’s nothing fancy, but it keeps the conversations going and the connections fresh. Plus, it’s a great reminder that this platform is about real people, not just metrics and reach.

As weird as it may be, your SSI score is more than just a number. It’s a mirror.

It reflects whether you’re showing up with authenticity, building real connections, and positioning yourself as a trusted voice in your space.

If your score is low, that’s not a failure, it’s a starting point.

So if your score’s not where you want it to be, don’t stress. It’s just data. And the good news? Data can change.  Likely, it's telling you that you just need to show up with more of you.
