How Much Does a Google Ads Click Cost in Halifax in 2026?

Most Halifax businesses pay somewhere between $2 and $10 a click on Google Search. Restaurants, retail and events sit at the bottom of that range. Lawyers, dentists and home improvement sit at the top, and can go past $10 on the most competitive terms. The all-industry average across North America in 2026 is $5.42 USD. Halifax usually comes in under it.

That is the number. The rest of this explains where it comes from, why yours will be different, and how to turn a click cost into a budget you can defend.

Where the number comes from

Google does not publish click prices. The best public data is the WordStream and LocaliQ benchmark report, which pooled more than 13,000 search campaigns across 23 industries between April 2025 and March 2026. Those figures are in US dollars and mostly from US accounts.

The 2026 averages across every industry: 6.64 per cent click-through rate, $5.42 cost per click, 8.18 per cent conversion rate, and $66.69 cost per lead.

Use them as a ceiling, not a target. Halifax has fewer advertisers bidding on most local terms than Toronto or Boston does, and a click is worth what the second-highest bidder was willing to pay for it. Fewer bidders, cheaper clicks. The exceptions are covered below.

Average cost per click by industry

These are the 2026 WordStream and LocaliQ figures, in US dollars, for Google Search.

Restaurants and food, $2.05. Arts and entertainment, $1.63. Travel, $2.14. Automotive sales, $2.27. Sports and recreation, $2.77.

Real estate, $3.22. Finance and insurance, $3.39. Furniture, $3.97. Animals and pets, $4.06. Shopping and gifts, $4.14. Automotive repair, $4.35. Apparel, $4.44. Beauty and personal care, $4.62. Physicians and surgeons, $4.76. Education, $4.81.

Career and employment, $5.81. Business services, $5.87. Industrial and commercial, $5.87. Health and fitness, $6.17. Personal services, $7.17.

Dentists, $8.00. Home and home improvement, $8.33. Attorneys and legal services, $9.87.

Three things stand out. Legal is the most expensive category and rose 15 per cent this year. Home services, which covers most of the trades, is the second most expensive. And the cheapest categories are the ones where the click rarely leads straight to a purchase, which is why they are cheap.

Why Halifax is usually cheaper, and when it is not

A Google Ads click is priced by auction, one search at a time. Every time someone in Halifax types "emergency plumber," Google runs a small auction between every advertiser targeting that search in that place. You pay a cent more than the advertiser below you needed to hold their spot, adjusted for ad quality.

So the price of a Halifax click depends on how many businesses are bidding for Halifax searches, not on what a click costs in Toronto. For most local service categories that number is small. A dozen bidders, sometimes fewer. That is why a Dartmouth physiotherapy clinic can see clicks well under the $6.17 benchmark for health and fitness.

Two things push Halifax prices up toward, or past, the benchmark.

The first is national lead sellers. In legal, home services, insurance and moving, there are companies whose whole business is buying clicks in every Canadian city and reselling the leads. They bid in Halifax the same way they bid in Calgary, and they set the floor for everyone else.

The second is a handful of local competitors who bid aggressively on the same five terms. Three roofing companies all wanting "roofing Halifax" at the top of the page can double the price of that term for all three, while "roof repair Bedford" sits untouched at a fraction of the cost.

What actually moves your click cost

Four things, in order of how much control you have.

Keyword choice. "Lawyer Halifax" is expensive because everyone wants it. "Wills and estates lawyer Bedford" is cheaper and the person searching it is closer to hiring. Broad, short terms cost the most and convert the worst.

Match type. Broad match lets Google spend your money on searches it thinks are related. It often is not, and you pay full price for the guess. Phrase and exact match cost less per useful click because more of the clicks are useful.

Quality Score. Google grades every keyword from 1 to 10 on expected click-through rate, ad relevance and landing page experience. A 7 or above gets a discount on every auction. A 4 pays a premium. This is the lever most small accounts never touch, and it is the one that compounds.

Location and schedule. Bidding on all of Nova Scotia when you serve the peninsula and Dartmouth wastes money on clicks from Yarmouth. Running ads at 2 a.m. for a service nobody books at 2 a.m. does the same.

From cost per click to cost per customer

Cost per click is the number everyone asks about and the least useful one to plan with. The number you need is cost per customer, and you get there in three steps.

Take the click cost. Say $6.

Divide by your landing page conversion rate. The 2026 average is 8.18 per cent, so $6 divided by 0.0818 is about $73 per lead. That is close to the benchmark cost per lead of $66.69, which is reassuring, because it means the maths holds.

Now divide by your close rate. If you turn one lead in three into a paying customer, that is roughly $220 per customer.

Whether $220 is good depends entirely on what a customer is worth to you. For a $150 drain cleaning it is a disaster. For a $4,000 kitchen or a $2,500 legal matter it is one of the cheapest ways to get work that exists.

Do this sum before you spend anything. If the answer is bad, more budget makes it worse, not better.

What a sensible starting budget looks like

Work backwards from the click.

At $5 a click and a 5 per cent conversion rate, which is a fair starting assumption for a new account before any optimisation, $1,000 a month buys about 200 clicks and 10 leads. Enough to learn something. Not enough to learn it quickly.

At $500 a month in the same category you are buying five leads. One bad week and you have no idea whether the campaign works or you were unlucky.

At $10 a click, in legal or home improvement, $1,000 buys 100 clicks and five leads. You need more, or you need to narrow the targeting hard so each click counts.

Our own floor for Google Ads spend is $1,200 a month, and the reasoning is the arithmetic above. Below that, in most Halifax categories, there is not enough volume in a month to separate a working campaign from a coincidence.

How to check your own number in ten minutes

Open Google Keyword Planner. It is free with a Google Ads account, and you do not need to run ads to use it.

Type the three or four phrases a customer would search for your service. Set the location to Halifax, or to Dartmouth, Bedford and Sackville if that is where you work.

The tool shows a low and high bid estimate for top-of-page placement, in Canadian dollars, plus monthly search volume. The high estimate is roughly what an aggressive bidder pays. Most well-run accounts land between the two.

Multiply the mid-point by the monthly searches. That is the most you could spend on that phrase in a month if you took every click. If it is a small number, the phrase is a small opportunity, however cheap the clicks.

What this post does not tell you

It does not tell you what your click will cost, because nobody can until the campaign runs. The benchmark gives you the neighbourhood. Two weeks of live data gives you the address.

It also does not tell you whether Google is the right platform at all. If nobody in Halifax is searching for what you sell, the click cost is irrelevant, and you want Meta instead. We wrote that up in Google Ads or Facebook Ads: which one first.

If you want the click cost in your category, for your part of HRM, with the maths done for your margins, that is a conversation. Book a call and bring the price of one customer. We will bring the rest.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Google Ads click cost in Halifax?

For most local businesses, $2 to $10 a click on Google Search. Restaurants, retail and events sit near $2. Lawyers, dentists and home improvement sit near $8 to $10 and can go higher on the most contested terms. The 2026 all-industry average is $5.42 USD, and Halifax usually comes in below it because fewer advertisers bid on local searches.

Why are Google Ads clicks cheaper in Halifax than in Toronto?

Because click prices are set by auction, one search at a time, and there are fewer advertisers competing for Halifax searches. You pay just above what the next bidder needed to hold their spot. Fewer bidders means a lower price. The exception is categories where national lead sellers bid in every city, such as legal, insurance and home services.

What is a good cost per lead from Google Ads?

The 2026 benchmark across all industries is $66.69 USD per lead, ranging from about $27 in arts and entertainment to $131 in legal. A good number for you is one where the cost per lead, divided by your close rate, comes in well under what a customer is worth. Work that out before you spend, not after.

How much should a small business spend on Google Ads to start?

Enough to buy roughly 10 leads a month, because fewer than that is too little data to judge. At $5 a click and a 5 per cent conversion rate that is about $1,000 a month. In expensive categories like legal or home improvement it is more. Our own minimum is $1,200 a month in spend.

Can I lower my Google Ads cost per click?

Yes. Use phrase and exact match instead of broad. Bid on specific, longer phrases rather than short generic ones. Improve Quality Score by making the ad and landing page match the search closely. Restrict your location to the areas you actually serve, and your schedule to the hours you actually take calls. Most accounts can cut 20 to 40 per cent off their click cost with those four changes.
