How Much Should I Pay for Local SEO? Real 2026 Prices

Mine starts at $1,200 a month for SEO on its own, three month minimum. Five of six Halifax agencies told me what they charge and most run $750 to $3,000 a month for marketing management, with local SEO on its own sitting at the low end of that. Under $750 you are usually buying one person's spare hours alongside their other work.

That is the price. What follows is what the money buys, and the one thing it cannot move.

Three jobs hiding inside one invoice

Local SEO sounds like one service. It is three.

The Google Business Profile, which decides whether you appear in the map at all. The website, so your pages say where you work and what you sell in a way a machine can read. And reviews, steadily, for as long as you are in business.

A retainer that only does the third one is a review-chasing service with a better name. Ask which of the three you are paying for before you sign anything.

Nobody puts proximity on a pricing page

My office is in Rockingham. A nine-point rank grid around it in September, four kilometres between points, found My Ads Team at five of the nine. Average position 11.6.

Number one at my own desk. Nowhere else.

Google weights how close you are to the person searching, and it weights it heavily. Content does not change that. Neither does three thousand a month. Someone in Dartmouth typing my service into their phone is standing closer to a Dartmouth office, and most of the decision is made before anybody writes a word.

The American pricing guides AI pulls from will sell you a package tier and a calculator. None of them mention the thing that caps what any tier can do.

What that means for your budget

If you serve one part of town and your address is in it, local SEO is the cheapest good marketing you can buy. The map pack converts better than anything else I run.

If you cover all of HRM from one address, go in knowing what you are buying. Some of the money goes on reviews that name the places you actually drive to, because once proximity has had its say that is one of the few things left that still moves.

And if you are sitting on page five today, nobody fixes that in a quarter. Impressions move around month three, leads somewhere between month six and month nine.

What you can do yourself tonight, for nothing

Open your Google Business Profile and look at the primary category.

Mine was blank. Google had stripped the old one out and left the slot sitting there empty, and primary category is the signal I would fix before any other on a profile. Fixing it was one dropdown.

Then fill in every other field, put up real photos, list your services with descriptions, and start asking for reviews. That is most of the free tier, and it is the part people skip before they go shopping for a retainer.

Do all of it and if you still cannot be found, the problem is the website or the proximity. Only one of those is for sale.

Before you pay anyone

Ask for the last client they got into the map pack and how far out it held. Ask which of the three jobs the retainer covers. Ask who owns the profile when you leave.

Book a call if you want someone to read your profile before you spend anything on it. I work with businesses across Halifax and all of Nova Scotia, and a good number in the United States. If the free tier is all you need, I will say so.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do local SEO myself?

The profile half, yes. Set the primary category, fill every field, add photos and service descriptions, and ask for reviews every month. Harder alone is the website side, and knowing which of your problems is distance rather than effort.

Is local SEO worth it for a small business?

If customers find you by searching for what you do near where they are, yes. The map pack is the best converting channel I run for local clients. If you sell to a whole province from one address, paid ads often pay back faster.

Does local SEO still work?

Yes, and the profile matters more than it used to. AI answers read your website and your Business Profile to decide who to name, so the same work feeds both. Ten blue links are no longer the only prize.

What is the best local SEO tool?

For a single location you do not need one. Your Business Profile dashboard shows searches, calls and direction requests for free. Paid tools earn their place for a rank grid showing how far your visibility reaches, or several locations at once.
