SEO or Google Ads: Which Should a Halifax Business Do First?

Navy graphic with white text reading Ads are rent. SEO is a mortgage. My Ads Team.

Start with Google Ads. You will have leads inside a week, and you will learn what people actually search before you spend a year writing pages about it. Start SEO at the same time only if you can fund both for at least six months. If you can fund one, ads first is the right call almost every time.

That is the opposite of what a lot of agencies will tell you. The reason is in our own numbers, further down.

The difference that actually matters

Google Ads buy you position today and stop the moment you stop paying. SEO buys you position you keep, and it takes months to arrive.

Ads are rent. SEO is a mortgage. Neither is the smarter purchase in the abstract. If your business needs customers this quarter, rent is the correct decision, and the question is not which one wins. It is which one your cash flow can survive.

What our own SEO page earned in six months

Here is a number most agencies would not publish.

Between 19 March and 19 September 2026, the SEO service page on this site was shown in Google results 10,099 times. It earned 7 clicks. Average position 48.3, which is page five. Click-through rate 0.07%.

Our Facebook Ads page did worse: 4,054 impressions, one click, average position 75.6.

We are a marketing agency. Those pages are well built and the structured data is correct. They still earn almost nothing from organic search, because Halifax agency search is a crowded category and we have not spent eighteen months building the authority to outrank the firms who have.

That is what SEO looks like before it works. Not broken. Early, on a timeline measured in quarters.

What the map listing did over the same six months

Over that identical window, the Google Business Profile listing for My Ads Team earned 33 clicks at an average position of 11.1.

Every page on the website combined earned 31.

The free local listing outperformed the entire site. If you run a local business in Halifax and your Google Business Profile is half filled in, that is the cheapest work available to you and it beats both options in this post on cost per lead. Do it before you spend anything.

Start with Google Ads if

People already search for what you sell. In Halifax, "halifax plumber" gets 720 searches a month and a click costs around $5.47. "Emergency plumber halifax" is 70 searches a month at around $9.80 a click. That demand exists right now and you can be in front of it on Monday.

You need to know whether the offer works. Ads return a verdict in weeks. SEO returns one in a year, by which point you have paid for the year.

Your sales cycle is short. Trades, clinics, movers, restaurants, anything someone books within a few days of searching.

You already have a page that converts. Ads pointed at a weak page waste money faster than anything else in marketing.

The tell: if you can write down the exact phrase someone types before they call you, and it has volume, buy it.

Start with SEO if

Your clicks are expensive and your margins are thin. Some categories price a click higher than the lead is worth. If the arithmetic fails at auction, ranking is the only way in.

You already rank on page two for things people buy. Moving from position 12 to position 5 is a different job from starting at 48. It is faster, cheaper, and the best SEO money anyone spends. Check Search Console before assuming you start from zero.

Your category is not crowded. "Halifax plumber" carries a difficulty score of 6 out of 100. "Marketing agency halifax" carries 30. Low difficulty means months rather than years.

You have patient money. SEO compounds and ads do not. A page that ranks in month nine is still earning in month forty.

What SEO costs before it pays anything

Our minimum for SEO is $1,200 a month. The first three months produce pages, fixes and structure. Most clients see movement in impressions around month three, and movement in actual leads somewhere between month six and month nine.

So the real question is whether you can pay $1,200 a month for six months and treat all of it as investment. That is roughly $7,200 before the first reliable lead.

The same $7,200 in Google Ads at a $5.47 click buys about 1,300 clicks. At a 5% conversion rate that is 65 leads.

Those 65 leads arrive during the six months. The SEO arrives after them.

If you serve Dartmouth, Bedford, Sackville or Burnside

Proximity decides a great deal of local search. Google weights how close the searcher is to your address, and content does not change that. We rank first at our own office in Rockingham and considerably lower four kilometres away.

Ads ignore distance. You set a radius and you appear inside it. If your customers are spread across HRM while your address sits in one corner of it, paid search covers ground that organic search will not, and it covers it immediately.

That is a specific argument for ads first in this city, and it applies to any Halifax business whose service area is wider than its own neighbourhood.

The mistake that wastes the most money

Buying SEO because it sounds cheaper than ads.

It is not cheaper. It is slower, and slow is its own kind of expensive. A year of SEO at $1,200 a month costs $14,400 whether it worked or not. A year of ads at the same spend produces leads every month, and you can stop in month two if it fails.

SEO is worth buying. It is not worth buying first with money you need back this year.

The order that works best

Run ads until the leads are steady and the numbers are known. Then add SEO underneath, funded by the revenue the ads produced.

That sequence works because the ads teach you what the SEO should target. Three months of search term reports tell you exactly which phrases turn into customers and which ones burn budget. Writing pages against real conversion data beats writing them against a keyword tool.

The reverse order has no such advantage. Start with SEO and you spend the first six months guessing. That is part of what we do in the first ninety days of any engagement.

How to decide this week

Open Google Search Console. If you do not have it set up, that is your answer. Start with ads.

If you do have it, filter for queries with more than 100 impressions and an average position between 5 and 20. Those are pages already close to the first page. If that list has anything on it, SEO will pay quickly and you should fund it.

If the list is empty and your average position looks like ours did at 48.3, you are eighteen months from meaningful organic traffic. Buy the clicks while you build.

Either way, check your Google Business Profile first. It is free, and in our own data it outperformed every page on this website put together.

Frequently asked questions

Should I do SEO or Google Ads first?

Google Ads first, in almost every case where you can only fund one. Ads produce leads within a week and tell you whether your offer converts. SEO takes six to nine months to produce leads, so it is the better second purchase, funded by revenue the ads generated. The exception is a business already ranking on page two for terms people buy, where SEO pays much faster.

How long does SEO take to bring in leads?

Impressions usually move around month three. Leads usually follow between month six and month nine. In a crowded category it takes longer, because ranking there is an authority problem and authority is built from links, mentions and time. Our own SEO page sat at average position 48.3 after six months of correct technical work.

Is Google Ads more expensive than SEO?

Per month they are similar. Our minimums are $1,200 a month for either. The difference is timing. Ads spend produces leads in the same month you spend it, and stops when you stop. SEO spend produces nothing for months, then keeps producing after you stop.

Can I do SEO myself and pay someone for ads?

Yes, and for a small local business it is often the sensible split. The highest-value SEO work is your Google Business Profile, your reviews, and clear pages that answer the questions customers actually ask. All three are doable in-house. Ad auctions punish inexperience more quickly, which is where paid help earns its keep.

What is the cheapest thing a Halifax business can do first?

Fill out your Google Business Profile completely and ask customers for reviews. It costs nothing. Over six months our own listing earned 33 clicks against 31 for the entire website, and it ranks on proximity, which means a Dartmouth or Bedford business competes locally without needing site authority.
