Can I Use ChatGPT to Run My Ads Instead of Paying Someone?

My own ad account, not a client's. I was pushing AI to see where it would break. The budget was meant to be fifty dollars a day. AI set it at five thousand.
It never ran.
So yes, AI can run your ads. Faster than I can. What it will not do is notice when a number is wrong.
That gap is what you are actually paying someone for, and nobody puts it on a pricing page.
AI has a role in running ads
A real one. So let me set that out before I tell you where it broke.
It drafts the ads. Twenty headlines in ten seconds and three of them usable. It builds the keyword lists. It rewrites the same offer eight ways so you can test it. It explains what a metric means in words a human understands, which Google has never once managed.
It is also patient. You can ask it the same beginner question four times and it answers like it is the first time. I cannot do that. Neither can the agency you are thinking about calling.
None of what follows is an argument against using it. The argument is about knowing what you are looking at.
If you are writing your own ads tonight and using AI to go faster, keep going. That part works.
What happened with the budget
Same digits. Different unit. Meta does not handle numbers the way a person writing a sentence handles numbers, and AI did not know that, and it had no reason to stop and check.
It never spent a cent. I was looking for exactly this, so I found it, and the number was wrong to me in about a second.
That second is the job. Someone who did not know what five thousand a day looks like would have hit publish.
Not the writing. Not the keyword list. The second where someone who has seen a thousand of these looks at the screen and says no.
Meta did not warn me
That is the part I keep coming back to.
No confirmation step. No are you sure. Nothing flagged a daily budget that had jumped a hundredfold. It sat there, ready to run, looking exactly as ordinary as fifty dollars had looked ten minutes earlier.
Think about which direction that error runs in. Set a budget a hundred times too low and you get nothing, and it costs the platform nothing. Set it a hundred times too high and you spend the money with them. Only one of those is worth building a warning for.
The only thing between that number and my credit card was me noticing.
Why AI will not catch it
It has no idea what your account normally does.
You know what fifty dollars a day looks like in your business. You know which month is your slow one. You know a lead is worth four hundred dollars to you and worth nothing to the plumber down the road. AI has none of that. It is working from the sentence you typed, not from your business.
And it is confident. That is the part that gets people. A wrong number arrives in the same calm, helpful tone as a right one. Nothing flashes. Nothing asks if you are sure.
Your judgment. Your margins. What you would never spend.
None of that is in the tab.
Three things that go wrong where you cannot see them
The budget was the loud failure. These are the quiet ones.
Numbers in the wrong unit. Not only budgets. Bid caps, lifetime against daily, a currency that is not Canadian dollars. Any of them will run for a week before you notice, because the account looks like it is working.
An audience that is technically correct. You ask for homeowners in Halifax. You get homeowners in Halifax. You also get the ones living in a building full of rentals, and the ones who already bought from you in March. The targeting did what you said. It did not do what you meant.
Tracking that is not there. This is the expensive one. AI will happily point a campaign at conversions when nothing is sending conversions back. It cannot tell. It reports success either way, because the only thing it can see is the number the platform handed it.
That last one is worth the arithmetic. Halifax clicks run $2 to $10 on Google Search. Say yours cost $6. If your form stopped emailing you in March and nobody noticed, you are buying clicks at six dollars and throwing away every lead they produce. Over a month that is real money, and the screen said everything was fine.
How to make AI better at this
If you are going to use it anyway, and you should, give it the thing it is missing.
Tell it your numbers. What you charge. What a customer is worth to you over a year. What you spent last month and what came back. What you will not do, like discounting, or running ads on a Sunday.
Then ask it to show its working on anything with a dollar sign in it.
It gets noticeably better. It still cannot see your account.
What help costs, cheapest first
Most owners think the choice is a retainer or nothing. It is not.
A Strategy Consultation is the cheapest door and most owners do not know it exists. You keep your account. You keep running it. You keep using AI to draft. You get someone to look at what you have built and say where it is leaking. No retainer, no minimum, no contract.
It suits the owner who is doing fine and is stuck on one or two things. Which is most people reading this.
If you want someone in the account every week instead, that is a retainer. Halifax agencies charge $750 to $3,000 a month to manage marketing. Mine starts at $1,200.
What that covers is somebody whose job it is to look. Before it runs, then every week after. Someone who notices the form stopped working, who knows a 2 per cent conversion rate is a problem and 8 is normal, who will tell you the campaign is not the issue and the offer is.
Same person either way. The difference is how often.
When AI on its own is the right answer
Sometimes it is, and I would rather say so.
If you are spending ten dollars a day, do not hire anyone. The fee would be bigger than the spend. Run it yourself, use AI to write, and read the number twice before you publish.
Same if you have one offer and one audience and it is working. Do not let anyone talk you into complexity you do not need.
Same if you like it. Some owners enjoy this. If that is you, the four hours a week is not a cost.
Check your own account tonight
Three things, ten minutes.
Open the budget field and read the number out loud. Not the one you meant. The one that is there.
Then look at what you spent last month and how many enquiries came in. If you cannot answer both from your own records, tracking is the first job, not more spend.
Then fill in your own form and see if the email arrives.
Book a call if you want a second pair of eyes on it. I work with businesses across Halifax and all of Nova Scotia, and a good number in the United States. If AI plus your own four hours is the right answer for you, I will say so.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use ChatGPT to run Google and Facebook ads?
Yes, for the writing and the thinking. It will draft ads, build keyword lists and explain what the metrics mean. It cannot see your account, so it cannot tell you when a setting is wrong. Check every number it gives you before you publish, especially budgets and bids.
What mistakes does AI make with ads?
The costly ones are numbers in the wrong unit, like a daily budget that comes out at a hundred times what you meant. Audiences that match your words instead of your intent. And pointing a campaign at conversions when nothing is sending conversions back. None of those look wrong on the screen.
Can I get help without putting an agency on retainer?
Yes. Book a Strategy Consultation, keep running your own account, and use the time to get a second opinion on what you have built. There is no retainer and no minimum. It suits owners doing the work themselves who want to stop guessing.
Is it cheaper to use AI than to hire a marketing agency?
In cash, yes. A management retainer in Halifax runs $750 to $3,000 a month and mine starts at $1,200. AI costs a subscription. What you pay either way is your own time, about four hours a week, plus whatever a mistake costs before you spot it.
Does Meta warn you if an ad budget is set too high?
It did not warn me. I set a daily budget a hundred times higher than I meant in my own account and nothing flagged it, with no confirmation step before it was ready to run. Read the budget field yourself before you publish, every time.
Read the number out loud
Send me what you spent last month and what came back. I will tell you if AI plus your own hours is enough.
