What Does a Marketing Agency Do for a Small Business?

A marketing agency runs the ongoing work that gets a small business found and gets the phone ringing. That means search work, paid ads, and a monthly report that says what changed. The fee pays for a skilled person's steady attention on those jobs, so you can run your business instead.
Most of what you pay for is not visible on any one day. It shows up over a quarter, in an account that gets better instead of one that drifts.
The work is mostly setup and upkeep
A good month starts with a plan. Someone looks at what you sell, who buys it, and where those people look first. Then they pick the channel that fits.
Most small business work lands in one of three places. Search, which is SEO. Google Ads. Or Meta ads, which means Facebook and Instagram. You do not need all three. Many owners need one.
Then comes the upkeep. Someone builds the account and checks the tracking, so a phone call or a form fill is actually counted. They cut the search terms that waste money. They rewrite the ads nobody clicks. They fix the page people land on.
You are paying for judgment, not button clicks
Anyone can click the buttons inside an ad account. The skill is knowing which button, and when to leave it alone.
A good agency has seen the same mistakes in many accounts. It knows what a healthy account looks like and what a leaky one looks like. That pattern sense is the thing you are renting, and it is hard to build in a spare hour on a Sunday night.
The fee is a monthly number
One channel, either SEO, Google Ads, or Meta ads, starts at $1,200 a month. Two channels bundled start at $2,000 a month. Both have a three month minimum.
Ad spend is separate. That money goes to Google or Meta, not to me.
In 2026 I asked six Halifax agencies what they charge. Five shared their numbers. Most sit between $750 and $3,000 a month for management, with the lower end around $1,000. That is my own research, not an industry survey.
If you want the longer breakdown, I wrote it up in what a Halifax marketing agency costs.
You should see a plan and a report every month
The month should start with a plan in writing. It should end with a report that says what was done, what changed, and the one number you both watch.
You should be able to read that report in one sitting and know where you stand. If it needs a translator, it is not written for you. Ask for plain words, and ask again if you do not get them.
Ask one more thing before you sign. Who owns your ad account decides who holds the keys if you part ways. It should be you.
What the fee does not buy
It does not buy a guaranteed ranking. It does not buy a guaranteed number of leads. Nobody honest can promise either one, because search engines and ad platforms are not run by the agency.
It also does not buy knowledge of your customers. You know them better than I do. The best work happens when you tell the agency what people ask on the phone, what they complain about, and why they pick you.
If you are still deciding whether to hire anyone at all, that is a different question. I answered it in doing it yourself or paying someone. Here the question is only what you get once you decide to pay.
Book a call and tell me which channel you are weighing. I will say what I would do with it, and what I would leave alone. Halifax and all of Nova Scotia.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a marketing agency for a small business cost?
Mine is one channel from $1,200 a month, or two channels bundled from $2,000 a month, with a three month minimum on both. In Halifax, most of the agencies I asked in 2026 sit between $750 and $3,000 a month for management.
What should a marketing agency send me each month?
A plan at the start and a report at the end. The report names the work done, what changed, and the one number you both watch. It should be written in plain words.
Will a marketing agency guarantee me leads?
No, and be careful with any agency that does. Search engines and ad platforms decide what happens on their side. What an agency can promise is the work, the reporting, and honest advice when something is not working.
How long is the minimum term with a marketing agency?
Mine is three months, for one channel or for two bundled. Nothing meaningful shows up in thirty days, so a short trial rarely tells you much. Ask any agency what happens the day after the term ends.
Read the contract before the pitch
Send me what you pay now and what came back last quarter. I will tell you whether a retainer is the right shape for it.
